It claims to be, in short, a next-generation lie detector. Released in by Converus, a Mark Cuban—funded startup, EyeDetect is pitched by its makers as a faster, cheaper, and more accurate alternative to the notoriously unreliable polygraph. Screening new hires used to involve lengthy, expensive polygraph tests, which typically require certified examiners to facilitate them. Increasingly, however, Walters tells me, law enforcement agencies are opting for EyeDetect. Unlike a polygraph, EyeDetect is fast and largely automatic. This bypasses one of the pitfalls of polygraphs: human examiners, who can carry their biases when they interpret tests. Moreover, EyeDetect is a comfortable experience for the test subject. An infrared camera observes my eye, capturing images 60 times a second while I answer questions on a Microsoft Surface tablet.

The widely accepted assumption underlying all of this is that deception is cognitively more demanding than telling the truth. Converus believes that emotional arousal manifests itself in telltale eye motions and behaviors when a person lies.

By comparison, many academics consider polygraph tests to be 65 to 75 percent accurate. The company already claims close to customers in 40 countries, largely using the EyeDetect for job screening.

In the US, this includes the federal government as well as 21 state and local law enforcement agencies, according to Converus. Converus says its technology has also been used in an internal investigation at the US Embassy in Paraguay. In documents obtained through public records requests, Converus says that the Defense Intelligence Agency and the US Customs and Border Protection are also trialing the technology.

A federal law prohibits most private companies from using any kind of lie detector on staff or recruits in America. Taking an EyeDetect test is as painless as Jon Walters promised.

He asks me to pick a number between 1 and 10 and write it on a scrap of paper before I sit down in front of the EyeDetect camera. Walters instructs me to lie about my chosen number, to allow the system to detect my falsehood.

A series of questions flash across a screen, asking about the number I picked in straightforward and then roundabout ways. I click true or false to each question. Almost immediately after the test is over, the screen flashes a prediction based on my eye motions and responses.

The researchers hope their system could soon be used in courtrooms to tell if people on the stand are telling the truth. After watching 15 videos from courtrooms, DARE was then tested on whether it could tell if someone was lying in a final video. The researchers said that DARE managed to spot 92 per cent of the expressions, which the researchers describe as a 'good performance on the final deception detection task.

To compare how effective DARE was, the researchers gave the same task to human assessors. To develop DARE, the researchers trained the system using videos of people in the courtroom.

In their study, published in arXivthe researchers, led by Dr Zhe Wu, said: 'On the vision side, our system uses classifiers trained on low level video features which predict human micro-expressions. The team trained the AI to recognise five micro-expressions known to indicate that someone is lying - frowning, eyebrows raising, lip corners turning up, lips protruded and head side turn.

Results showed that DARE managed to spot 92 per cent of the micro-expressions, which the researchers describe as a 'good performance'.

The researchers suggest that the system could be even more effective if the AI was provided with further information.

They added: 'When complementary information from audio and transcripts is provided, deception prediction can be further improved. The study involved 1, faces of Chinese men aged 18 to 55, which were 'controlled' to account for 'race, gender, age and facial expressions. The images were fed into a machine learning algorithm, which used four different methods classifiers of analysing facial features, to infer criminality.

The researchers write: 'All four classifiers perform consistently well and produce evidence for the validity of automated face-induced inference on criminality, despite the historical controversy surrounding the topic. Given the likely importance that advances in artificial intelligence could play in shaping our future, it is critical to begin a discussion about ways to take advantage of the benefits of AI and autonomous systems, while mitigating the risks. Major AI conferences are more frequently addressing the subject of AI deception too.

And yet, much of the literature and work around this topic is about how to fool AI and how we can defend against it through detection mechanisms.

These may seem somewhat far-off concerns, as AI is still relatively narrow in scope and can be rather stupid in some ways. However, if we are to get ahead of the curve regarding AI deception, we need to have a robust understanding of all the ways AI could deceive. We require some conceptual framework or spectrum of the kinds of deception an AI agent may learn on its own before we can start proposing technological defenses.

If we take a rather long view of history, deception may be as old as the world itself, and it is certainly not the sole provenance of human beings. Adaptation and evolution for survival with traits like camouflage are deceptive acts, as are forms of mimicry commonly seen in animals. But pinning down exactly what constitutes deception for an AI agent is not an easy task—it requires quite a bit of thinking about acts, outcomes, agents, targets, means and methods, and motives.

What we include or exclude in that calculation may then have wide ranging implications about what needs immediate regulation, policy guidance, or technological solutions.

I will only focus on a couple of items here, namely intent and act type, to highlight this point. What is deception? Moreover, depending on which stance you take, deception for altruistic reasons may be excluded entirely. Intent requires a theory of mindmeaning that the agent has some understanding of itself, and that it can reason about other external entities and their intentions, desires, states, and potential behaviors.

This could be as simple as hiding resources or information, or providing false information to achieve some goal. If we then put aside the theory of mind for the moment and instead posit that intention is not a prerequisite for deception and that an agent can unintentionally deceive, then we really have opened the aperture for existing AI agents to deceive in many ways. What about the way in which deception occurs?

That is, what are the deceptive act types? We can identify two broad categories here: 1 acts of commission, where an agent actively engages in a behavior like sending misinformation; and 2 acts of omission, where an agent is passive but may be withholding information or hiding. AI agents can learn all sorts of these types of behaviors given the right conditions.

In more pedestrian examples, perhaps a rather poorly specified or corrupted AI tax assistant omits various types of income on a tax return to minimize the likelihood of owing money to the relevant authorities. The first step towards preparing for our coming AI future is to recognize that such systems already do deceive, and are likely to continue to deceive. Once we acknowledge this simple but true fact, we can begin to undergo the requisite analysis of what exactly constitutes deception, whether and to whom it is beneficial, and how it may pose risks.This research was performed using Swarm AI technology to assess deceit in the smile videosa method that employs both human judgement and artificial intelligence algorithms to achieve results that are generally more accurate than either humans or software can do alone.

A few minutes later, as they walked down the street, two police officers approached them and accused them of having robbed a man at knifepoint a few minutes earlier, outside a nearby train station.

The victim had identified Mervilus and his friend from a distance. Desperate to prove his innocence, Mervilus offered to take a polygraph test.

He was distraught and anxious when the police strapped him up to the device. He failed the test, asked to take it again, and was refused.

After Mervilus maintained his plea of innocence, his case went to trial. The judge sentenced him to 11 years in prison. The belief that deception can be detected by analyzing the human body has become entrenched in modern life. Despite numerous studies questioning the validity of the polygraph, more than 2. US federal government agencies including the Department of Justice, the Department of Defense, and the CIA all use the device when screening potential employees.

But polygraph machines are still too slow and cumbersome to use at border crossings, in airports, or on large groups of people. As a result, a new generation of lie detectors based on artificial intelligence have emerged in the past decade. Their proponents claim they are both faster and more accurate than polygraphs. In reality, the psychological work that undergirds these new AI systems is even flimsier than the research underlying the polygraph.

There is scant evidence that the results they produce can be trusted. Nonetheless, the veneer of modernity that AI gives them is bringing these systems into settings the polygraph has not been able to penetrate: border crossings, private job interviews, loan screenings, and insurance fraud claims. Corporations and governments are beginning to rely on them to make decisions about the trustworthiness of customers, employees, citizens, immigrants, and international visitors.

But what if lying is just too complex for any machine to reliably identify, no matter how advanced its algorithm is? Inquisitors in ancient China asked suspected liars to put rice in their mouths to see if they were salivating.

As the United States entered World War I, William Marston, a researcher at Harvard, pioneered the use of machines that measured blood pressure to attempt to ascertain deception. These readings, Larson claimed, were an even better proxy for deception than blood pressure alone.

By the s, millions of private-sector workers were taking regular polygraph tests at the behest of their employers. The examiner then looks for sudden spikes or drops in these levels as the subject answers questions about suspected crimes or feelings. But psychologists and neuroscientists have criticized the polygraph almost since the moment Larson unveiled his invention to the public.

While some liars may experience changes in heart rate or blood pressure, there is little proof that such changes consistently correlate with deception. Many innocent people grow nervous under questioning, and practiced liars can suppress or induce changes in their body to fool the test. The devices always risk picking up confounding variables even in controlled lab experiments, and in real life they are less reliable still: since criminals who beat the test almost never tell the police they were guilty, and since innocent suspects often give false confessions after failing the tests, there is no way to tell how well they actually worked.
